RUBY RIDGE:

WHEN GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES GO, ROGUE

The Ruby Ridge incident of 1992 is an infamous example of government corruption, yet has largely been forgotten by many.

The incident began with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) raiding the Ruby Ridge cabin of Randy Weaver, his family, and their friend Kevin Harris. The raid was part of a lengthy investigation into Weaver by the ATF, who had accused him of selling illegal firearms. What ensued was a disastrous 12-day siege that resulted in the death of Weaver’s son Sammy, his wife Vicki, and a U.S. Marshal. The incident brought about a significant public outcry and raised questions about the tactics used by the ATF and the FBI.

The investigation into Weaver had begun two years prior, when an ATF informant named Kenneth Fadeley approached Weaver about illegally sawing off the barrels of shotguns for sale. Weaver initially agreed but backed out when he realized it was illegal. Despite this, the ATF continued to investigate Weaver and eventually obtained a warrant for his arrest.

When the ATF arrived at the Ruby Ridge cabin in August of 1992, they had no intention of peacefully arresting Weaver. Instead, they attempted a “dynamic entry” by throwing flashbang grenades and shooting at the family’s dogs. Weaver, his wife Vicki, his son Sammy, and their friend Harris barricaded themselves in the cabin, leading to a protracted standoff.

The situation quickly escalated as the FBI and ATF deployed snipers and agents armed with M-16 assault rifles. In the ensuing gunfight, Sammy Weaver was shot and killed by an FBI sniper, and Vicki Weaver was shot and killed by an ATF agent. U.S. Marshal William Degan was also killed in the shootout.

In the aftermath of the siege, the government attempted to cover up their actions and minimize the public outcry. The Department of Justice conducted an internal investigation and found that the FBI had acted in accordance with their rules of engagement.

However, a later investigation by the Senate found that the FBI and ATF had violated their own rules and used excessive force. The Ruby Ridge incident exposed the corruption and abuse of power within the FBI and ATF. It highlighted the dangers of government overreach and the potential for government agents to act with impunity. It also demonstrated the importance of government transparency and accountability.

In the years since the incident, numerous reforms have been implemented to ensure the FBI and ATF adhere to proper procedures and protocols. The incident also resulted in a multi-million-dollar settlement for the Weaver family and the survivors of the siege. The Ruby Ridge incident is an important reminder of the need for government accountability and oversight. It stands as a stark reminder of the potential for abuse of power and the danger of excessive force.

In a democratic society, it is essential that government agencies are held accountable for their actions, and that citizens are protected from unwarranted government intrusion. The Ruby Ridge incident serves as a powerful example of the dangers of unchecked government power.
